Kim Clark on Leadership

Kim Clark, outgoing Dean of Harvard Business School for the past ten years, was interviewed by Charlie Rose on his last day in the job (7/29/2005). Great discussion about leadership and leadership education at HBS. Some interesting quotes:

Advice he’s given to each graduating class:

“There is no success in business—none—that can compensate you for failure at home.”

Comments on Leadership:

Leadership requires that you be about values…
it’s about inspiring trust…
competence is important…
but have to have character…
have to be able to act with integrity…
so when they say something, they act on it…
they walk the talk deeply...
they don’t just mouth the words…

Also:

Too many people out there whose lives are not happy
because they work in organizations that are poorly led.

Clark will shortly become President of Brigham Young University – Idaho.
