					<description>I don't think they work.  What evidence is their that they do work?  Wouldn't it be more sensible to only expend energy on them if there was good reason to believe they provide some value rather than looking for proof they don't?  Chapter 9 (Performance Without Appraisal) of The Leader’s Handbooks, by Peter Scholtes has some good material.  The performance appraisal category of my blog has some posts on the topic.</description>
